Sri Lanka and the Islamic Republic of Iran- Both countries account for inherited valued cultures dating back to many centuries. The then Ceylon and Persia; now Sri Lanka and Iran were ever since bonded with mutual cultural ties.

 A significant growth has been highlighted in various fields including science, medicine, defense system and art after the Islamic Revolution which also focused on Iranian film industry which has produced some of the best in the industry. Certainly, culture is an inherited gift with pros & cons. We should absorb what is suitable for us and leave out the rest.

 

IRAN CULTURAL CENTER

Affiliated to the Embassy of Iran in Sri Lanka, the Iranian Cultural Section is located in a central position with easy access to Colombo and suburbs. This spacious building consist of administrative offices, a well equipped library, an auditorium, conference room etc.

Press TV telecast – the English news channel of the Islamic Republic is available to the public at the Cultural Section lobby.

LIBRARY

The library is opened to the general public Monday to Friday from 09.00 to 17 00 hrs each day except on holidays. Consisting of a variety of selections it provides facilities for reference, lending, Audio-video and internet facilities.

 Daily newspapers (local) in English, Sinhala and Tamil are available for reference.  The range of books consist of General topics, Religion, Islamic books, Quranic Studies, Prophet Muhammad(SAW), Persian language and literature, Imam Khomeini’s speeches,  Iranian cinema, Islamic journals, Islamic Jurisprudence, Islamic Revolution(Iran), Iranian Arts and Calligraphy and many more reading materials available in English, Sinhala, Tamil and Persian languages.

ACTIVITIES:

Many events and programmes are taking place on a regular basis: few of them are listed below:

 PUBLICATIONS

Quarterly magazine ‘Thoothu’ (Tamil) and Sandeshaya (Sinhala) are now published on time,and distributed  to readers free of charge. The magazines are posted to libraries, Institutions and private addresses as per our mailing list. Articles containing latest political, economical, religious, cultural, scientific, sports and miscellaneous issues with regard to Iran are included in the magazines. Interested parties or individuals may write to us to include their names in the mailing list.

Apart from these publications the cultural section has already published several books on religious and cultural topics and Insha Allah hope to continue the same in the future too.

Iranian religious scholars, artistes, and other prominent figures are visiting Sri Lanka on a regular basis. Whenever these individuals or groups are in the country, the cultural section arranges cordial meetings with the respective local persons and groups to exchange views among themselves.

 The cultural section also conducts various programmes including Seminars, exhibition, Film Festivals and competitions.

 FILM FESTIVAL:

Annual film festival is organized by the cultural section to commemorate the anniversary of the Islamic Republic. Selected films directed by world renowned Iranian directors are shown in this film week at a prominent venue in Colombo for the general public free of charge.

 FILM SHOW

In addition to the annual film festival to serve the public demand about Iranian films, the Cultural Section is screening selected good quality Iranian movies at its auditorium each month. Films are scheduled for one year commencing from the Persian New Year.

 

 SEMINARS AND MEETINGS:

The cultural section invites writers, poets, journalists and artistes on a regular basis and engage in cordial discussions and exchange views with them on current subjects. We also arrange Haj seminars annually to make an awareness about the significance of Haj and its impact on the world Muslim Ummah. As per the time and need we arrange or assist various other seminars and discussions among the local community.

The Cultural Section also takes part in exhibitions and other cultural related events organized by external groups. We prepare to put stalls to depict Iranian Culture and its scientific advancements in major exhibitions upon request.

 

 IRAN CORNER:

It is a new concept to be implemented by the Cultural Section; under this the Cultural section is in the process of establishing Iran Information centres by the name of Iran Corner. These centres will be established at leading universities and academic institutions. The first Iran Corner was declared open recently at the National Library and documentation Centre, Colombo-07.
